Coming off a below par effort in last week's game, the Uni side were required to substantially lift their performance against the current leader in the other league and prime candidate for promotion. The indicators were positive from the start as new dutch signing Maarten showed his ability by starting off a move from the middle of the park and getting into the box to finish it off inside the initial few minutes of the match. From there the game settled down into a contest as the home side made several dangerous attacks by getting crosses across the front of the Uni goal without a striker getting a touch. Barass in goal, along with Tor, Pete, Mads and Tim coped well with the pressure, while Rob and Mat B more than held their own in midfield as Uni went into HT one goal to the good. In the second half Wests maintained their tactic of trying an intimidatory style of football to upset Uni's organisation, thereby earning not only the ire of the referee but a growing number of yellow cards. Uni started to dominate the middle third and a precision passing move found Bosco on the left. His low pin point cross met Rob's perfectly timed run in behind the defense and he drilled it first time for one of the best team goals of the season. At 2- 0 the home team's frustration peaked as a bad over the ball challenge on Maarten from one of their older and more seasoned campaigners lead to that player's dismissal along with a painful introduction to local football for the Uni player. He seems to have recoverd OK, but it could have been worse such was the tackle reminiscent of Andy Cole's on Simon Colossimo a number of years ago. At 10 v 11 Uni had to adjust and Wests pushed forward in search of a goal. The pressure worked when Tor was judged to have handled the ball in attempting to block a shot and the penalty was converted. Uni regrouped and reasserted their control as Rob set up Bosco for goals three and four with accurate passing against a tiring defense and the Uni striker took his opportunities well. A second yellow reduced the locals to nine players and the game was over, although no more goals were added. A great effort and the Uni victory song was never sung with more gusto than it was in the visitors rooms after this match. The boys should bottle this performance and take it with them for the rest of the season.
RESERVE GRADE: UNI 1 (Phil) V WESTS-ILL 2
The ressies started off in good style when Phil put away a cross in the early minutes of the game. For some reason the players then could not go on with the task of winning the football match. The home side were back on level terms quickly and got a second by HT. In the second period the boys went through the motions of playing the game without really looking likely to score a goal or several. Low motivation, low application, poor focus, not enough energy to keep a shape to enforce a consistent playing pattern -- get down to training lads, work on fitness, urgency and a winning psychology as a unit. Otherwise its goodbye for 2008 and a chance at the finals!
YOUTH GRADE: UNI 1 V WESTS-ILL 1
A point away from home against Wests is on the surface of it, not a bad outcome. In fairness the boys did pick up from last game. The tendency to
take it easy when not in possession of the ball was still there and more urgency is required in closing down opponents in the middle and back thirds. Uni scored first as the improving Paul Formosa put away a header from a Rowan free kick and this was the HT score. Twenty minutes into the second half and the locals went down to nine players. This seemed to spur them on and they managed to score from a free kick to level the encounter and claim a point that they should never have got. Uni had chances to score late in the match, but showed inexperience in breaking down the nine man defense and wasted what should have been a valuable three points. Still football is a game of learning and there was plenty to digest from this performance to take to upcoming games.
June 15 ROUND 12 v RUSE FC at Kooloobong OvalFIRST GRADE: UNI 1 (Tor) V RUSE 2
Firsts went down for the second time this season and for the second time at home and for the first time ever at home to the visitors from Campbelltown. With Pete and Abdul involved in exams Uni might not have had their strongest team on the park, but this was no excuse for the poor passing, low mobility and carelessness on the ball which characterised this effort. Hopefully this will prove a wake up for the players that they cannot take their football lightly or for granted and that they still have to stick to the task and do the hard work. Otherwise they may slip down the ladder and lose second spot in their league. As it was in this game casual defending allowed Ruse to get two first half goals. Tor managed to get one back when he scrambled a header over the line in the second half, but the team struggled to get in behind the opponent and never threatened seriously in getting level as Ruse always looked dangerous with their speed on the counterattack. As teams are fitter at this stage of the season the ability to apply themselves physically to matches will be more apparent in getting wins in the second half of the competition. For every game remaining this year all players must turn up with the right individual preparation and in the right frame of mind ready to play.
RESERVE GRADE: UNI 1 (Will) V RUSE 4
The ressies were forced to put together a scratch team due to absences caused by exams and injuries. Several YG boys had to double up as coach Wayne had to reorganise the side. Uni took the lead midway in the first half when Will put a corner in directly from his kick. At this point football wise the boys tried to knock it around and create chances on goal. However when it came to defending the reorganised side was caught out and Raph was exposed too often in the Uni goal. Down 2--1 at half time, then 4 -- 1 at FT, the players never looked likely to get themselves into a position to make something of this match. They will have to wait until next week to pick up the pieces and put together a more regular starting eleven.
YOUTH GRADE:UNI 2 (Tim, Paul) V RUSE 3
Uni took the lead in the first half when Tim cleaned up the scraps following a good Uni passing move and they held this until HT, although they could have lead by more had they turned their many attacks into goals. In the second half Uni failed to compete defensively and it did not take too long before it was 1 -- 1. The boys responded by dropping their heads further and it was soon 1 -- 3 to the visitors. Paul got one back at the end of the match but it was too late by then to get an equaliser. It finished 2 --3 in a disappointing effort as coach Bosco summed it up "not enough of the basics required to win ... too slow, too lethargic and too disinterested".
June 01 ROUND 11 V SHELLHARBOUR CITY at Oak FlatsFIRST GRADE: UNI 2 (Dan B, Bosco) v SHELLHARBOUR CITY 2
Keith Bond Oval always provides its own challenges to visiting sides and today's opponent is never easy to overcome on their home pitch. Coach Mick employed a more attacking formation going for three at the back and allowed midfield players to get forward in attacking roles. However despite their lowly position in the league, SC pressured Uni all over the park and frustrated then with their work rate and ability to get back in numbers to set up a defensive wall which was difficult to penetrate. The home side scored first against a slightly below par Uni team in terms of energy, when the ball was turned over in midfield and the Uni defense was unable to close down the short quick passing move and was badly caught out in conceding the goal. The inability to keep the ball was a cause of many problems in Uni being able to get control of the match throughout the first half. Eventually a well-placed header by Dan got Uni back on level terms and a fine passing move started by Bolty via Mat B ended up leaving Bosco with a simple tap in for the second goal. SC continued to apply pressure and equalised with a free kick which eluded the wall to find the top corner of the goal, despite Jakob's determined effort to keep it out. The second half again proved an even tussle and Uni lifted their intensity to pressurise the opposition's goal. Rob and Dan both went close, while SC looked to use their quick players on the counter attack. No addition was made to the score, although Uni can consider themselves unlucky when in the last seconds of the match Dan had the ball in the net only to have the goal denied with the ref blowing FT as the ball was being headed in from two metres out.
RESERVE GRADE: UNI 2 (Dave, Will) V SHELLHARBOUR CITY 3 (3 pens)
This match was the tale of three penalties -- all against Uni, all by different players and all put away from the spot. Pauly was responsible for the first. Dave then equalised with a header. HT it was 1-1. Raph dragged down the striker for the second. Will then equalised with a good strike to make it 2-2. Kam was accused for the third when the ref ruled an intentional hand ball when a strong drive hit him in the body and may have deflected onto his arm. Intentional? The ref deliberated and pointed to the spot. In between the boys can be pleased with the tactical approach and sound football principles they used. By using the ball they had the opponent pushed back into their defensive third consistently and but for a touch more bite in the box would have deserved to win the match.
YOUTH GRADE: UNI 4 (Richmond 3, Tim) V SHELLHARBOUR CITY 0
Coach Bosco was well satisfied with the performance of the boys, both in the manner in which they played, in the number scoring opportunities they created and in their first clean sheet of the season. It seems the hard work and training effort are paying off and a finals spot is well within reach. Two goals to Richmond and a goal to Tim had Uni well in control by HT. The second half was more relaxed, with Richmond getting his third with a well placed lob over the keeper. That's six in three games to the player from Ghana and a leading goal scorer award is possible by the season's end if he maintains this rate.
