In this replay of the 2007 grand final , a close encounter was expected at Kooloobong. Whether Uni were particularly pumped to overcome an opponent they had not defeated in four encounters last season, or whether BSSC were complacent after having not experienced defeat since the pre-season final of that same year, it was apparent that the result was going only one way in this match. After some early exchanges in which Berkeley's mobility and ability to move to space put pressure on the Uni defense, Uni started to take midfield control, and goals were the outcome. Dan Baker put a perfect shot into the top corner after turning his marker in the box, Bosco again got his foot to a loose ball in the goal area for number two, before taking advantage of a gift to place the ball into an empty net for number 3 by HT. In the second half, Berkeley came out and by pushing players forward did keep Uni in their own half for the initial fifteen minutes, although without scoring. As Uni kept more MF control chances came and Rob went close before Henry, after having kept his cool excellently in his first grade starting debut, brought down the striker and a penalty made it 3 --1. Berkeley needed another to crack Uni, but it was Dan who calmly put away his second after good work from Bosco, and then his third with an outrageously nonchalent shot into the top corner from range. Berkeley did get a second, but all too late and the Uni team were well pleased with their football and their victory.

RESERVE GRADE: UNI 1 (Oscar) --- Berkeley SSFC 2

The strong Berkeley reserve grade were expected to prove too strong for the Uni team. However the boys matched their opposition and employing a different formation were able to take it to the other team in good style. With the game evenly balanced, a defensive error gave away easy possession and the ball was in the back of Uni's net. Keeping their shape and structure, Uni played enterprising football and were rewarded through an Oscar penalty to make it 1 -- 1. This could have been the final score, however another defensive error minutes from time conceded number two and the three points on offer. Coach Wayne was pleased with the team's display football-wise, despite simple unforced errors in defense. In particular he signalled out Will for his role at right-back which could see him maintain that position in defense and attack in up-coming games.

YOUTH GRADE: UNI 7 (Tim 2, Matt, Paul, Leigh, Rowan, Zeyad) --- Berkeley SSFC 0.

Up against eight players this was always going to be a game which Uni would win. The question was how they would do it -- by playing football or by a kick and chase approach in which individuals all want to get onto the scoreboard? The team followed instructions and elected to use their advantage in space and numbers to keep possession, keep shape and structure and use both width and the ball tactically to create chances. They kept this up for the major part of the game and created an abundance of chances to be four up by HT. In this Alex at sweeper, along with Sunny, Tim and Zeyad all contributed strongly to the team's performance. Hopefully the boys will have developed tactically from this game to apply these ideas in the next game against a full eleven.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-11T07:22:29Z</dcterms:modified>

BERT BAMPTON CUP RD 1 v WOLLONGONG UNITED (7/5/08)

The Uni under 23's put up a competitive effort against their Premier League opposition in going down 4 -- 1 last Wednesday night at Towradgi Park. Fielding a blend of players from each grade the team took some time to settle into a match rhythm and were behind by two goals in the first half, before Dan Baker put one away so that Uni were well in the game at 1--2 by HT. In the second half the greater speed, physicality and technical ability of the opponent began to assert itself and the Uni boys had to work hard to stay in the game. As it was, a penalty which saw Chris Dimoski sent off and an unfortunate own goal from Evan decided the result. Pete Richardson again put in an outstanding effort, while Will, Evan and Dan all had sound games for their side. As coach Mick said, it a shame that this team did not have more games together to improve as a unit, as the indications were there that they may have been able to do something in this competition. It's a knock out comp and Uni are GONE........... for 2008.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-11T06:10:46Z</dcterms:modified>

Double Header Weekend Sat 3rd & Sunday 4th May

Round #7 - Uni Vs Corrimal, Sat 3/5 @ Memorial Park, Corrimal

FIRST GRADE: UNI 7 (Dan B 2, Matt B 2, Bosco, Rob, Rusty ) -- Corrimal 1 (og)

Uni completely dominated the struggling Corrimal team despite conceding an own goal in the first minutes of the game. This was immediately cancelled out with Bosco making it 1-1 after five minutes. To their credit Corrimal pushed the Uni boys and the game was competitive in the first half hour before a Rusty screamer from the edge of the box and a calm finish from Rob made it 3 -- 1. Dan B added his first for the match to have Uni well in control at 4 -- 1 by HT. While Uni's dominance in the second half almost made Barass a victim of mind boggling boredom such was his lack of involvement in the match (a dangerous predicament for a team with a GK of his qualities), carelessness in front of goal kept the scoreline static until the late period of the half. Abdul showing his abundant speed and skill which caused the hapless Corrimal defenders all sorts of problems during the afternoon, finally set up Matt B for his first goal. Dan B added his second and Matt then finished the scoring following good lead up work from Pete who showed sound attacking as well as his usual defensive sense. It is anticipated that next week's home match against a rampant Berkeley in a replay of last year's GF will be a much more demanding encounter for the Uni team as they attempt to push their way up the league ladder.

RESERVE GRADE: UNI 1 (Flash) -- Corrimal 0.

Coach Wayne was generally satisified with a solid performance from the ressies in which they showed composure on the ball and managed to keep their shape well with a good all round effort involving an appreciation of the importance of using width in attack. In a match where neither side had many scoring chances, the outcome was decided by a Flash headed goal from a corner in the second half and a goal line clearance from Pauli to keep it that way. Frankie's positive contribution over the eighty minutes and the manner in which Dave and Christian displayed good input in carrying out the roles given to them were notable features of the team's effort.

YOUTH GRADE: UNI 4 (Gary 2, Richmond, Zead) -- Corrimal 2.

At last a win for the YG boys. Coach bosco was happy with the improved showing of the side over previous weeks as the team got off to a positive start thanks to early goals by Richmond and Gary before defensive indecision in the box let in the Corrimal striker for a gift goal. To their credit the players kept their heads up and continued to apply pressure in the attacking third. Gary scored from the penalty spot and then Zead fiinished off nicely in cleaning up the scraps to make it 4 - 1 by HT. The team worked hard in the second term without adding to their score and Corrimal were able to score again to make the result more respectable for them. Richmond's ability to hold up the ball and lay off penetrating passes for support players was again in evidence. In this he was ably supported by Gary and Rowan in applying pressure to the opposition defence.

Round #5 - Uni Vs Highlands, Sat 19/4 @ Renwick oval, Mittagong

This Weekend's match is Vs Highlands @ Renwick Oval. Kick-off times are:

Youthgrade - 11:30am

Ressies - 1:15pm

Firstgrade - 3pm

UNI V HIGHLANDS -- round 5 at Highlands Renwick Oval.

FIRST GRADE: Uni 2 (Rob, Dan) -- Highlands FC 1.

The Uni boys certainly sank the golden slipper into a confident Highlands outfit on their own turf. Up against a side which had scored 13 times in their opening four games and coming off a seven goal demolition in their previous encounter, a reconstructed first grade provided all the suspense, drama and upset to be found on any day at any racetrack in the nation. The boys got out of the gates quickly and in no time at all were out in front thanks to a neat piece of finishing by Rob to open his account for the season. With the punters suspecting an upset, it was game on as the home favourites applied pressure against a resolute Uni defense. 1 -0 it was at half time and trainer Mick was a nervous man as he sought to provide advice to his charges for a nail-biting second half. And so it proved to be with a fighting and determined resistance in which Pete and Barass almost together combined to keep the favourites at bay, ably supported by Tom, Tim and Kameron and the refusal of the whole team to concede. Just as the match was entering the long home straight Bolty latched on to a long clearance and intelligently played in Dan to slot his fourth goal for the season. Even at 2 - 0 the pressure continued to be applied and only minutes from the finishing line Highlands managed to convert one of their many scoring chances. However the boys rode out the encounter to win by a short half head in a performance which was a testament to team spirit and self belief. Not pretty to watch and the bookies are still shaking their heads.

RESERVE GRADE: Uni 0 --- Highlands FC 3.

The ressies are still a work in progress and despite this scoreline they are building on the formation being established by coach Wayne over the last few weeks. While the principles of defensive structure are emerging, there are still problems in technique and in the ability to link and get forward in attack. There is a need to make more options for the player on the ball and to reduce unforced errors which are hurting the team at key parts of the match. In this game poor tracking and closing down by the midfield allowed a sharp shooting Highlands to score twice in a five minute period at a stage in the first half when Uni were well into the game. Despite conceding an early goal in the second half to a well taken shot, the players did not panic and played passing football to feet, keeping possession and making good use of width. Keep up this approach and chances will come. Special mention for the efforts of Murray ( what does this guy not do in this club!), Evan and Flash for their consistency and contribution to the team's effort.

YOUTH GRADE: Uni 1 (og) --- Highlands FC 6.

In a first half in which Uni were competitive for extended periods the boys went into the break down by a single goal. In the second half they conceded a goal and the game almost from the whistle and totally lost momentum. The coaches agree there is talent in the squad and they urgently need a good result to get them on track. So keep up the effort at training and eventually it will happen on the park. Scotty and Jake were notable for sticking at the task when things were not going well and showing strong resilience for the full eighty minutes.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-04-20T03:24:44Z</dcterms:modified>

Round #5 - Uni Vs Highlands, Sat 19/4 @ Renwick oval, Mittagong

It was hard to believe that this was substantially the same team that defeated todays opponent in the semi-final last year. Gone was the self-belief and confidence which allowed that side to control the ball and dominate games and the determination to deny the other side similar opportunities. This side appeared disoriented, disinterested and disconnected from the realities required to compete at first grade level. New coach Mick Rowles will need to urgently look at his resources to tighten up a defense which has conceded eleven goals in three games and changes could be made if players are available who are better able to operate in a defensive capacity. If not, it is up to the players themselves to examine their game and make a collective decision not to repeat the lacklustre effort of todays match. That said Dean Grant did put in a determined effort with limited opportunities up front, while Barass in goal could not be held at fault for the seven times he had to pick the ball out of the net.

RESERVE GRADE: Uni 1 (Phil) -- Woonona 1

In his first full game in charge new coach Wayne was satisfied with the manner in which the players contested this tough, well-fought game. The boys achieved the objectives set out in training in a real match situation and were able to adjust their tactics to soak up the pressure, especially in the second half. The team displayed loads of character in getting level and holding on to the result against an organised and structured opponent. Well done to Tom and Flash for their role in holding the defense together and to Phil for another screamer of a goal to get the equaliser -- just remember to keep your shirt on!!

YOUTH GRADE: Uni 0 -- Woonona 3

This game had many of the attributes of the first grade encounter to be played later in the day. To put it bluntly the perfortmance lacked "heart", with a low level of intensity and a reluctance to compete. Defensively the marking was not tight enough in the defensive third and the team was too slow to use the ball when going forward. All this points to greater effort at training on improving these aspects of play. Jacob in goal and Rowan do deserve credit for the application they displayed over the eighty minutes.

The UOWFC 2nd game of the season was Saturday 29/3/08 @ kooloobong oval Vs Bellambi. The results are as follows:

First Grade - WON 3 - 1 (Dan Baker x 2, Bosco)

With an understrength side due to the absence of six players from round 1, Uni had no option but to reshuffle their team and hope everything turned out OK. It started off promisingly when after two minutes Bosco was able to scramble the ball over the line for an early lead to Uni. The remainder of the game in the first half was scrappy with little evidence of cohesion and shape in the play by either side as they battled it out in a display that was less than pretty to watch. The second half showed more initiative and Bakes put Uni two ahead with a well struck volley catching the Bellambi keeper well off his line. Bellambi hit back soon after when a free-kick from outside the box took a deflection and went in off the post. Not to be outdone Bakes added his third goal in two matches when he calmly slid the ball under the keeper to make the game safe for Uni with less than ten minutes to go. Under the circumstances a good win to put the firsts undefeated after two rounds.

RESSIES - WON 6 - 1 (Phil x2, Oscar, Frank, Chandler, Muz)

What a difference a week makes as the ressies turned around the 5 - 1 thrashing from round 1 to win 6 - 1. The presence of Flash at the back might have been the difference or was it the return to playing of Muzza? The facts are the game was close for about 50 of the 80 minutes before Uni ran away with it. Muzza's opening goal in the first half was cancelled out by a possible reserve grade (in fact any grade) super scissors-kick back to goal strike of the year to equalise. Phil then put Uni ahead with the first of his quality finishes and from then on Uni regularly put the ball in the net to record their first win of the season and hopefully the first of many more to come.

YOUTH - Lost 0-2

Bosco's boys are learning the hard way that in this game you must convert possession into chances and chances into goals. The team did control things in mid-field for long periods in the first half and but for a lack of urgency in the attacking third and a reluctance to take advantage of width to get around the back of the opponent might have found a goal or two. Bellambi scored early in the second half from a well hit shot which gave the keeper no chance, but even this was the result of allowing him too much space to run at the goal virtually unchallenged. As Uni went looking to get even they did play sound passing football in the build up and made better use of width. However it all came to nothing as goal number two was conceded again from casual marking and defending. Here's hoping for better luck in the next game against Woonona.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-03-31T06:58:44Z</dcterms:modified>

Game #1 - Good Friday 21/3 @ Kooloobong Oval Vs Helensburg

Good Friday and the season starts in earnest for the 2008 IFA teams. Gone are club stalwarts Webby, Paulo and Troy and a new crop of players will turn out for the students. Also gone are successful 2007 coach Carl Jacobs and we welcome Mick Rowles in the role of head coach. We wish him the best of luck as he has big shoes to fill. Bosco in addition to leading the attack in the firsts, has also taken on the job of mentoring the youthies. As yet a coach for the ressies has to be confirmed. In firsts a nucleus of last year's grand final runners-up remains with Barass, Robbie, Bosco, Deano, Tor, Mads, Bolty and Abdul returning to form a competitive side with strong ambitions. The chances are there for other players to claim a first grade starting spot given enough application and dedication.

Ressies also see new players along with the return of former club icons such as Ricky and Flash in what can turn out to be an interesting blend of youth and experience. Evan, Kameroun and Oscar can be expected to play major roles in the resurgence of the ressies.

Youth grade is full of potential and it is time for the boys to realise this and again resume the normal place of Uni YG as one of the better outfits in the league. Among a group of players from the 2007 squad, a lot will be expected from Sunny and Henry as the senior players in this side. A positive development is the number of goalkeepers training with the club and Barass has genuine backup for his first grade spot between the sticks should he be unavailable.

On a sadder note the face of Uni football in the Illawarra for over three decades, Peter Bannister "Banno", will not be around as much this year due to ill health. We wish him all the best in his recovery and should any new players see a old guy in a Uni tracksuit at the games then go up to him and say hello. Without his contribution the club would not be going today.

The club's committee is Murray Doyle "Muzza" (president), Dave Denmead (VP), David Boscoscuro "Bosco" (secretary), Dean Grant "Deano" (treasurer), Tor Preece (Registrar). These guys have a reponsibility for the whole club, not just the IFA teams. It is not their job to do all the off-field work and three of them are registered players. All players can be called on to do their bit. If asked please be supportive as the jobs will be shared around, including ball boys, manning the gate, helping in the canteen, looking after the shirts etc. THATS HOW THIS CLUB WORKS!! The club's policy is to not put too much of a demand on players selected in first grade on that afternoon, so youthies and ressies are expected to put in the lion's share of the off-field work. This means that it is helpful if

they hung around and did not take off when their game is over -- not just to help out but to give some support to the firsts. The more players who contribute the stronger and more successful the club will be.

DONT FORGET THE AFTER MATCH PRESENTATION BACK AT THE BUILDERS -- 6.30 for player of the match in all grades. The more bodies that turn up wearing the Uni shirts the better the impression we make with the Builders OUR MAJOR SPONSOR!!

And so to the Round 1 fixtures V Helensburgh.

Firsts- Uni 3 (Mat Baker, Bosco, Tor) : Helensburgh 3.

After going behind to a first half penalty, a clinical finish from Mat Baker and a Beckham-like free-kick

from Bosco had the boys ahead at HT. Defensive indecision and poor communication at the back cancel-

led out the lead, only to see Tor force the ball over the line from a freekick to again put Uni ahead. As in

the 2007 decider, the lead was not sustained and again the defense cracked as the Burgh pushed for-

ward to equalise. And so it ended with one point which could well have been three.

Ressies - Uni 1 (Oscar pen): Helensburgh 5

As the result suggests there is a lot of work to do and a lot of room for improvement. The sooner they

come together as a squad and train like a team the sooner their results will look up. Early days and

time is on their side if the players believe they can do it.

Youthies - Uni 2 (Richmond, No 13) : Helensburgh 2

A fair start for a team which has the raw material do succeed. More confidence on the ball and a less

rushed approach are needed to improve the quality of their football. As they play more games together

the cohesion and fluency of their play will develop and they will threaten many teams in the league.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-03-24T21:39:06Z</dcterms:modified>

Saturday 15/3 Trial Games @ kooloobong ovals

The Bra Boys (Maroubra Beach Football Tournament 01-12-2007)

It’s currently the off-season, and whilst some in the club were off putting in some solid training (for the Santa Claus Pub Crawl), others were putting their lives on the line in the Maroubra Beach Football Tournament.

The boys were hosted by Matty Daley the night before, and in grand Uni tradition weren’t in the best of ways the following morning. One of the guys was apparently dragged into a laneway by some Canadian chick (at least, he says it was a chick) but apparently a good time was had by all.

The morning proved to be an interesting learning curve for all involved, and anybody expecting to emulate the Beach Football World Cup that they’d seen on TV was in for a rude shock. Nobody had thought to inform the Uni team that running for two minutes on soft sand was ridiculously hard and it was only through our large numbers of sub’s that we managed to go ok. There were 4 pools of 4 teams, with 10min halves. The top 2 teams from each group went into the quarters.

It was quickly apparent that dribbling was out of the question, with a kick and chase game tending to work out the best. It seemed that our games always turned into slog fests, with the Uni guys tending to out muscle their opponents, where as the other games that we watched seemed to actually grasp the idea of passing a ball on sand.

In a (relatively) well organised event, the uni boys managed to get through their 3 games with 2 draws and a win, with the obligatory walks over to the pub between the games. Proving that all their charm had not been wasted the previous night, the guys managed to scam about 6 hats from the bar chick at the Maroubra Bay Hotel.

The guys did manage to bring the traditional ‘Half-time heroes’ to Maroubra, with many spectacular bicycles and headers. The guys will tell you that they all went in…

The quarter final was a fierce encounter (as fierce as Beach Football can be) with the guys getting up in extra time with a golden goal from Oscar. There was only one casualty from this game, with a piece of glass in the sand and an unwary toe connecting. However, it wasn’t all bad as this meant that a case of beer could be bought and consumed by those not playing.

Funnily enough most of the team got into these beers, and surprisingly the semi proved to be our best game of the day. As Robbie put it at half time, “the talk is great out there guys!” Maybe somebody should pass this on to Coach Carl….

In any case, the semi proved to be our downfall, and despite the game being the best of the day, we could only convert 1 of our 3-4 golden chances in the first half, but still went to half time feeling good. Unfortunately the second half was our downfall, and a run away goal and a penalty sent the Uni team home, sore heads and calves being the order of the day.

The first grade team put on a very strong performance against Berkeley as the first division grand finals returned to Ball's Paddock at Bulli after a two year absence. For the Uni club it was a big day, having won their only first grade grand final on this ground in 1989, and having been defeated there as recently as 2003. There was no doubt the boys were up for it and were one up when Bosco turned the ball into the goal from a corner in their first attack of the match. This was offset when Berkeley equalised also from a corner soon after. Uni played the better football and Scotty was very prominent with his attacking style runs which created chances and placed pressure on the opponent's defense. Bosco again went close, as did a free kick from Madz. However, at the HT break it was one goal apiece. This break also added a new dimension to the IFA policy a creating a more family-friendly environment as the performance by the Illawarra Pipe Band included a cameo role by a dekilted member of the group displaying a different set of "bag pipes" to his fellow marchers, much to the amusement of the many children and their parents at the game. No doubt this betters the hound crapping on the pitch routine we saw last week at Corrimal; although there are some who would not agree. Anyhow back to the football.

The first ten minutes of the second half was going to be crucial and Uni again were the first to score when a well-hit shot from Burbo was fumbled by the big keeper and Deano was on the spot to drive it home. Uni 2 - Berkeley 1 and a lot of time to be played. In grand finals against any opponent you cannot afford a soft spot in which intensity drops. In the lead again Uni allowed this to happen and lost their way when they should have been applying pressure to close Berkeley out of the match. It did not take too long before a cross from the left was headed into the goal against a defense which showed minimal determination to prevent it. Uni 2 - Berkeley 2. This pattern continued in the middle stages of the half as Uni struggled to gain dominance in midfield. A free-kick awarded to Berkeley near halfway was quickly played forward with the defense ball watching and disorganised. The striker was able to weave his way past several defenders into the box before slotting the third and decisive goal into the Uni net. With about fifteen minutes to go it was now Uni who had to play catch-up and Abdul was brought on for Webby to add some extra attacking energy. A shot from Bolty was parried by the GK only to see Deano shank it over the bar, and a similar situation occurred soon after as Uni applied pressure, but no goal resulted. Madsy and Tor pushed up, leaving Barass exposed one on one at the back as their striker shot wide. After seven minutes of added time the ref signalled fulltime forcing Uni to wait another year for its taste of grand final victory. Despite the loss, it was positive to see the support the club received at the game from current and past members and particularly from the girls teams who despite having used up their voices at Uni games did manage to raise a racket to spur the players on. In addition Scotty was named player of the match in the losing side in a grand final. All that was left was to congratulate Berkeley on their win, receive the runners-up medals and it was back to the Builders to recover from the big day out at Bulli.

When a team of impoverised "students" takes on the IFA Division One "Millionaires" for a place in the season's showpiece event, the GRAND FINAL, the experts can only see one outcome. SO MUCH FOR EXPERTS - what do they know? In the first half it was Uni who took it up to their more highly rated opponent, as chances were created and either missed or saved. Rob, Bosco, Abdul, Burbo and Scotty all could have put Uni ahead by HT. As it was the teams went into the break at 0-0, with the boys from Kooloobong having had the better of things. Fernhill came out for the second half convinced that an early goal or two would finish off the interlopers, and they pressured the Uni defense. But with Matty Daly, Tor and Webby in particularly determined form, the "foxes" failed to make an impression in the refs score book. This changed about mid-way through the half when the Hill won the ball in midfield and pushed it out wide on the right. A good cross to the far post was cut back across goal for the on-coming striker, and Uni went behind. To their credit the boys, spurred on by their radical supporters, did not concede as Fernhill might have hoped. Abdul chased down a ball at the back of the Hill defense and in a race for the ball Bosco forced the keeper to spill it and he showed a striker's instinct in slotting it into the net to equalise. At about this time a local dog signalled what was to become of the League winners Grand Final aspirations when it came onto the pitch to crap not once , but twice on their offensive half of the field. At full-time it was locked up at one goal each and for the first time in this finals series extra time was required. Bourbo was the first to strike a nail into the Hill coffin when following a corner on the right he sweetly volleyed the ball into the net past a stunned defense. At the end of the first extra time period it was Uni 2 - Fernhill 1. Then in the second period a free kick from the left by Bourbo was turned into the goal by Bosco in spectacular fashion to make it 3-1 Uni with eight minutes left. Let the celebrations begin! Fernhill's chances of the League/Grand-final double were gone and it was Uni to take on Berkeley Sports in next week's grand final at Bulli. Congratulations to the whole team and coach Carl, with particular mention of the efforts of Tor, Matty D and Madsy in defense, Bosco who ran himself into the ground, Barass for a faultless display in goal, Scotty who stood up well to the physical barage from the Hill midfield while making penetrating runs in attack and finally the "old man" of the side, Webby who at 38 did not expect to see himself in a first grade grand final with Uni, and who did as much as any player in ensuring that they would be there. Good luck to the boys in the big one next week. the Uni crowd will be out in force - with NO CASH but ALL HEART!

UNIVERSITY "HIPPOS" 2 (Courtney, Sarah) - SHELLHARBOUR CITY PURPLE 3

Having come off a successful State Cup campaign the Hippos were favourites to carry off another piece of silverware by claiming the local grand final title and retain their status as the most successful team at UWSC. Coaches Bosco and Madz put out their strongest side and the girls started off the game strongly, making their opponents in purple look overawed and overwhelmed. Inside half an hour the Hippos turned their dominance into goals as Courtney Collins put away the first in fine style. It was only a matter of time before Sarah Cox outjumped the defense to score number two with a classic header from a right-side corner, and Uni even managed to squander a penalty which would have made it 3-0 before the break. With Lean Carlon and Rochelle Borucinski controlling the midfield and Michelle Jerems looking safe at the back, Uni looked the goods for the prize. Unfortunately for the Hippos the second half proved that old football adage that a two goal lead too early can be the kiss of death to a team. Even when an early penalty brought it back to 2-1, Uni continued to dominate the game without adding to their score, while Shell City rarely looked to threated the Uni goal. This was to be the undoing of the side as two long range free kicks taken by the SC long bomb specialist resulted in two goals. The first was spilled by the Uni GK, allowing the striker to put it into the net while the defenders stood and watched. The second sailed over the GK's head to make it 3-2 with only minutes left. Uni tried hard to get the goal back, but ran out of time and luck. As they say "that's football!" Congratulations to the Hippos on another great season both for the spirit in which they play the game and the way they enjoy what they do, both on and off the park. The club wishes them the best of luck in the Champion of Champions competition and hopes to see them supporting the firsts in the coming finals games and a big presence at Preso Night on the 13th of October.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-09-17T23:55:54Z</dcterms:modified>

SEMI FINAL

UNIVERISTY 2 (Deano, Tor) - WOONONA 0

The Uni firsts took the field at Memorial Park knowing that this week there would be no second chance. Coach Carl was able for the second game in a row to put out his strongest eleven against a tough and experienced finals opponent in Woonona. The game could not have started off better for Uni when a dumb back pass by a Woonona player caught their GK (an ex-Uni player) by surprise, and he kicked the ball into the legs of Deano only to see it rebound into the net. 1-0 Uni and four minutes gone. For the next half hour Uni played the better football as Rob and Scotty worked well in mid-field and Uni kept the ball. This resulted in several good scoring opportunities but no further goals until HT. Woonona came out in the second half desperate for an early equaliser and pressured the Uni side, forcing a number of corners and scoring chances. Tor and Matty Daly showed their value and strength as defenders as the boys had to work hard to keep the lead in a tight contest. The second goal from Tor, a well struck header from a left-side corner, did not make the game safe for Uni. The final fifteen minutes was tense and a save from Barass to tip around a firmly hit shot on goal, was crucial. When the full-time whistle went, a relieved but deserving Uni team had earned their place in next week's semi-final against the season's top side, Fernhill. It will be tough but a place in the Grand-final is on offer and with luck and the right approach anything is possible. For footage of goals, click links below.

Finals football rewards the teams that can take advantage of what the football-gods throw their way. The object is to take the opportunities that are created and not give away scoring chances to the opposition. With the full first eleven available the Uni team attempted to play possession and move the ball around to probe any openings in the Berkeley defense. However Berkeley have not earned the best defensive record in the first division for nothing and give opponents limited occasons to get in behind them. Even when teams do, they still have to put the ball past their keeper - a large, agile bloke who seemed to take up the whole of the goal! Uni did get the opportunity to score - a header from Rob straight at the keeper, a Deano one-on-one right in front hit at the keeper, a failure to shoot by Burbo when in good position, allowing the defense to clear, and in the second half again an inability to shoot past the keeper by Deano and Bolty when good scoring opportunities presented. Berkeley showed themselves as being happy enough to sit back and catch Uni out when they relaxed and this ploy worked in both their goals. The first came from a Uni corner as the ball was cleared, and three passes upfield it was in the net with the defense caught out badly ball watching. Lesson - never, ever switch off in defense even when your team is on deep attack. HT 0-1. The second came from one of those GK bloopers - a harmless enough through ball went through to Barass - the team relaxes only to see the ball go through his fingers to be tapped in by a grateful striker who couldn't believe his luck. As Uni pushed forward the big guy in the Berkeley goal and the tight marking prevented any Uni score and the team left the field down but not out. They proved they can create and put pressure on, although it is now common for Bosco to be marked out of the game, so more attacking options are needed to open up defenses. The defense cannot afford to be careless as at this time of the year mistakes can be terminal. The year is not over, but the intensity of the effort needs to be lifted as more than ever it is the fine details that count. Good luck to the boys in next week's sudden death encounter against the old rival Woonona.

RESERVE GRADE VS WOONONA: Lost 3-0

The ressies put out a competent side on paper and were confident of going on in the finals series by overcoming the team that finished fifth in the competition. It would not have taken too long for the casual observer to determine which team finished where in this 5 V 8 encounter as unfortunately Uni struggled to match their opponent. So it proved to be and Uni were forced to spend long periods of the first half deep in their defensive third. Eventually they cracked and the first goal was conceded too easily. Uni, with Flash trying to make something happen, were unable to apply other than token pressure on the Woonona goal. The second goal was conceded early in the second half and defensive hesitancy allowed Woonona to close up the game for an easy win as the third was shot into Troy's goal midway through the second period. The ressies bow out of competition for 2007, but can look back on some good performances against the better reserve grade sides, mixed up with some forgettable efforts against the also rans.

The team started the match knowing that a win would give them third place and anything less fourth place. With Barass probably assigned to protecting other goals (ie APEC United's) instead of Uni's, Troy was again called up. Matty Daly and Deano made a long-overdue return to the starting side, while Evan and Nigel retained their places in coach Carl's team from the previous week. The game started well for Uni and they held control of the mid-field giving them the best of the early chances. Highlands are always a difficult opponent at Renwick Oval and they managed to push Uni as the game developed towards the latter part of the first half. At HT it was 0-0. In the second period Uni looked the team more likely to score, as Highlands looked to catch them out on the counter attack. It took a goal from captain Rob Denmead to break the deadlock, when his long drive from well outside the penalty area deceived the GK and seriously creased the back of the Highland's net. Still with plenty of time on the referee's watch Uni needed to continue to play out the game. This they did and except for misdirected finishing could have increased the lead, as it seemed that Highland's only chance of an equaliser might come from a Uni error. Still 1-0 is a good win away and congratulations to coach Carl and the first graders on the best overall result for first grade (3rd place) in years - possibly since the second place achieved by the grand-final winning team of 1989 according to Banno. The club wishes the team the best of luck in the first finals game against Berkeley Sports next weekend at a ground to be decided.

RESERVE GRADE: WON 4-0 (Nez, Oscar, Stewy, Russ)

The ressies had to win and hope Bellambi lost their game against Olympic if they were to make the finals. The first part of the ask was secured by HT thanks to a penalty by Neil, a fine finish to a team passing move by Oscar and a third by Stewy as the boys dominated the mid-field and created many chances up front. In the second half there were again early scoring opportunities and although the dominance was not as obvious as in the first half, this was a game Uni were never going to lose. A good finish by Russ late in the half added number four and the job was done - except for the result from Bellambi. It came through in the dressing room: Bellambi nil - Olympic 1!! Eighth place was theirs and a finals game against Woonona next week was locked in. Congratulations to coach Paulo and the ressies for the way they picked themselves up after a mid-season slump to achieve a finals place for 2007.

YOUTH GRADE: Drew 2-2 (DDaly, Gary)

A tenth place finish was the final outcome for the 2007 YG team. Unfortunately they saved the best to last as the team fought out a 2-2 draw against the third placed Highlands side away from home. Dan Daly opened his own season scoring account and the first for this game with a penalty. This was cancelled out by HT and overhauled early in the second half. Gary then scored to earn Uni a point and the boys played out their last game with enthusiasm and commitment to finish a controversial season on a high note. Here are some comments on the season from prominent YG identies:

Dan Daly (second YG season): "frustrating, good bunch of blokes, didn't play to potential, enjoyable".

Tom Close: (second season): "lack of consistency, enjoyed season overall".

Gary (first season): "inconsistent, had fun, disappointed, could have done better considering the players we had".

Simon(second season): " a strong finish was the highlight of the season"

Aaron (first season): " we didn't really come tenth, we just ran out of games!"

Coach Dan (rookie): "did well with a new team, the luck didn't go our way, injuries went against us, a lot of potential for 2008, Gary and Johnny were definite finds for the future of the club, Keiren showed great improvement in his confidence and Smiley had a fantastic attitude

for a player who was virtually forced into GK".

Better luck next year for the 2008 YG team - come to support the Firsts and Ressies in the finals and be there in numbers at Preso night to celebrate 2007 with the club at the Builders!
